I would like to provide you with an update concerning the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) investigation into the two recent incidents in our neighborhood, which were shared via Community Alerts on February 25th and May 2nd/3rd through Constant Contact. One incident involved armed suspects firing a round into a home they had attempted to burglarize.  Another involved three masked persons, guns drawn, approaching a home, the image caught on camera before they retreated.

While both incidents were reported to CSPD, we have recently been advised by CSPD that they will not be prioritized these two incidences for further investigation.

The decision is largely due to changes in Colorado state law enacted in 2021, which reclassified certain crimes—previously considered felonies—as misdemeanors. As a result, cases that once warranted full investigations may now receive limited law enforcement attention.

Such a shift reflects a broader trend across the state. According to the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report (UCR) / NIBRS data for 2023, Colorado ranks among the top states for crime rates nationwide. According to 2023 compiled data, Colorado ranks:

·         #8 in violent crime – 475 incidents per 100,000 people

·         #4 in property crime – 2,879 incidents per 100,000 people

·         #4 in auto thefts - improved from #1 in 2022

·         #2 Overall Most Dangerous in 2025 – Per US News and World Report

*NIBRS stands for National Incident-Based Reporting System.  It is a crime data collection system used by the FBI to gather detailed information on crimes reported to law enforcement agencies across the United States.

These statistics represent more than just numbers—they directly affect the safety and quality of life in our community.

Our BIS Officers will continue to monitor neighborhood activity closely and share updates with residents as new information becomes available. Despite shifting priorities and limited resources in law enforcement, our security team remains fully committed to doing everything we can to deter and respond to criminal activity.

Thank you for staying informed and engaged.
